Whole-home remodeling

Basement Remodeling in Pittsburgh

One owner-run crew turns an unfinished basement into real living space, built dry and built to last.

Finished basements built dry and built to last

A finished basement is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to your home. The walls and the roof are already there. Done right, it gives you a family room, a guest space, an office or a gym without the cost of building out.

Done wrong, it becomes a problem. We have torn out plenty of basements that someone finished over a moisture issue, and the new drywall and flooring went straight to the dumpster. We do it the other way around. We deal with water and humidity first, then we build. You deal with the owner from the first call to the final walkthrough, and you get a clear written quote before any work starts.

What we handle

Full basement finishing

Framing, insulation, drywall, flooring and lighting to turn raw space into a room you use.

Moisture and waterproofing

We deal with water first. Finishing over a damp basement just hides the problem.

Basement bathrooms

Adding a bath below grade where the layout and plumbing allow it.

Egress and bedrooms

Proper egress and framing when you want a real, code-minded bedroom downstairs.

Rec rooms and home offices

Family rooms, play spaces, offices and home gyms built to fit how you live.

Flooring built for below grade

Floors that hold up to a basement, installed over the right prep.

Moisture first. Always.

If you take one thing from this page, take this. The most important part of a basement remodel happens before any framing goes up.

A basement is below grade, and water finds its way in: through the walls, up through the slab, or as plain humidity that never quite leaves. When a basement gets finished over an unsolved water problem, it does not fail right away. It fails in a year or two, behind the new drywall, where you cannot see it until the smell and the damage are already there. By then you are not paying for a finished basement. You are paying to rip one out and start over.

So we start by understanding your basement. Where the water comes from, how the space behaves through the seasons, what it needs to stay dry. Sometimes that means drainage or a sump system, sometimes sealing and proper vapor control, sometimes just the right materials for below grade. If your basement has a real water issue, we will tell you straight before you spend a dollar on finishes.

What a basement remodel includes

Once the space is dry, the build is straightforward and we run all of it with one crew. Framing the walls, insulation, and electrical for outlets, lighting and any heating you need down there. Drywall, then the finish work: flooring built for below grade, trim, paint, and the lighting that keeps a basement from feeling like a basement.

From there it depends on what you want the space to be. A simple open rec room is one job. Adding a bathroom, a bedroom with proper egress, or a wet bar is more involved, because it brings plumbing and code requirements into the picture. We will tell you what your basement can support and what each piece takes, then build it in the right order so nothing is left half finished.

What it costs and how long it takes

Most finished-basement projects run about three to six weeks once we start, depending on the size and whether plumbing is involved. A straightforward open finish goes faster. A full lower-level suite with a bathroom takes longer.

Cost depends on the size, how much moisture work the space needs first, and whether you are adding a bathroom. Rather than guess, we give you a clear written quote after we see the space, and that quote is free. If you are weighing it against other projects, our general contracting page explains how we run larger, multi-part jobs.

Basement remodeling across Pittsburgh and the North Hills

We finish basements throughout Pittsburgh and the North Hills. The housing here makes it common work: mid-century ranches and split-levels in Ross Township and Shaler with big unused lower levels, and newer homes out in Wexford and Cranberry Township with basements just waiting to be built out.

Wherever you are, you get the same owner-run crew and the same clear process. See all the towns we cover on our service area page, or just call and ask.

Common questions

Basement remodeling questions, answered

Do you fix moisture before finishing a basement? +

Yes, and it is the first thing we deal with. Finishing over a damp basement just hides the problem and ruins the new work in a year or two. We address water and humidity first, then build. If your basement has a real water issue, we will tell you straight before you spend a dollar on finishes.

Can you add a bathroom or a bedroom in the basement? +

Often, yes. It comes down to ceiling height, where the plumbing runs, and proper egress for a bedroom. We will look at your basement and tell you honestly what it can support and what it would take to get there.

How much does it cost to finish a basement in the Pittsburgh area? +

It depends on the size, whether you are adding a bathroom, and how much moisture work the space needs first. A straightforward finish costs far less than a full lower-level suite with a bath. We give you a clear written quote after we see the space, so you have a real number before any work starts.

How long does a basement remodel take? +

Most finished-basement projects run about three to six weeks once we start, depending on the size and whether plumbing is involved. We give you a realistic timeline with your quote and keep you posted as the job moves.

Are you licensed and insured? +

Yes. Dogwood Builders is a licensed Pennsylvania contractor and carries insurance, on a basement the same as on any other job.

What areas do you serve? +

We work throughout Pittsburgh and the North Hills, including Ross, McCandless, Wexford, Cranberry Township, Sewickley and the surrounding areas. If you are nearby, just ask.
