Home Additions & Room Additions in Pittsburgh

Add the room your house is missing, built to match what is already there by one owner-run crew.

Add the room your house is missing

Sometimes the home you love is just one room short. A growing family, a parent moving in, working from home, or a kitchen that was never big enough. Moving is expensive and disruptive. An addition lets you keep the house, the street and the neighbors, and get the space you actually need.

We add on to existing homes throughout Pittsburgh and the North Hills. We are not a ground-up new-construction builder, and we will tell you that straight. But if you want to grow the home you already own, that is squarely what we do, with one crew, one written quote, and one person responsible from the first call to the final walkthrough.

Additions we build

Room additions

A new bedroom, family room, sunroom or office added onto the existing home.

Bump-outs

A few feet that change everything: a bigger kitchen, a real dining area, a larger bath.

Primary suite additions

A new primary bedroom and bathroom built as one finished space.

In-law and aging-in-place

A first-floor suite so family can stay close, or you can stay home longer.

Garage and over-garage space

Turning unused or new garage space into finished, heated living area.

Mudrooms and entries

The functional add-on that fixes how the whole house flows.

How an addition comes together

An addition is the most involved work we do, because it touches the parts of the house most projects never reach. Here is the order it happens in.

First the planning and the permits. A real addition ties into your existing foundation, framing and roofline, and it has to meet code, so the plan comes first. Then the foundation or footing for the new space, the framing, the roof, and getting it weather-tight so the rest of the work can happen dry.

From there it is the work that makes it a finished room: plumbing and electrical, insulation, drywall, flooring, trim, paint and the finishes that tie it to the rest of the house. One crew runs all of it, in the right order, so the new space is sound, sealed and built to last.

An addition that does not look bolted on

The difference between a good addition and an obvious one is whether it reads like part of the house. A bad addition announces itself: the roofline does not line up, the siding is close but not right, the windows are a different style.

We match the rooflines, the siding, the trim and the finishes so the new space looks like it was always there. That attention is the same thing our bathroom and kitchen customers hire us for. It is finish work, and finish work is what we are known for. Take a look at the kind of detail we bring on our bathroom remodeling and kitchen remodeling pages.

What an addition costs and how long it takes

Additions cover a wide range, because a small bump-out and a full primary-suite addition are very different jobs. The big drivers are the size, the foundation work, the roofline, and whether the addition includes a bathroom or kitchen.

They also run longer than a single-room remodel, because of the foundation, framing and weatherproofing involved. We give you a realistic timeline with your written quote, keep the site protected and clean the whole way, and that quote is free. For larger or multi-part projects, see how we run things as your general contractor.

Home additions across Pittsburgh and the North Hills

We build additions throughout Pittsburgh and the North Hills, on the bigger lots out in Wexford, Franklin Park and Gibsonia where there is room to grow, and on the established homes in Ross Township and McCandless that just need one more room.

Wherever you are, you get the same owner-run crew and the same clear process. See all the towns we cover on our service area page, or just call and tell us what you have in mind.

Common questions

Home addition questions, answered

What kinds of home additions do you build? +

Room additions, bump-outs, primary-suite additions, and in-law or aging-in-place spaces. We add on to existing homes throughout Pittsburgh and the North Hills. We are not a ground-up new-construction builder, but if you want to grow the home you already own, that is squarely what we do.

How much does a home addition cost in Pittsburgh? +

Additions cover a wide range, because a small bump-out and a full second-story or primary suite are very different jobs. The big drivers are the size, the foundation work, and whether the addition includes a bathroom or kitchen. We give you a clear written quote after we see the home and talk through what you want.

Do you handle permits and the structural side? +

Yes. A proper addition ties into your existing foundation, framing, roofline, plumbing and electrical, and it needs the right permits. We coordinate all of it so the new space is sound, sealed and built to match the house.

How long does an addition take? +

Additions run longer than a single-room remodel because of the foundation, framing and weatherproofing involved. We give you a realistic timeline with your quote and keep the site protected and clean the whole way through.

Will the addition match the rest of my house? +

That is the goal. A good addition does not look bolted on. We match the rooflines, siding, trim and finishes so the new space reads like it was always part of the home.

Are you licensed and insured? +

Yes. Dogwood Builders is a licensed Pennsylvania contractor and carries insurance. We are glad to share details when we come out to quote.

  • Matt and his company have been outstanding to work with from start to finish. Matt is extremely detail-oriented and approaches every project with the same level of care and attention as if he were working on his own home. No detail is ever overlooked. He is also incredibly fair and reasonable with pricing, highly responsive, and one of the easiest contractors to coordinate and schedule with. The level of service, professionalism, and genuine care he provides is difficult to find elsewhere, and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality work done the right way.
